Studying Spanish
Out of general interest and because I have Spanish-speaking friends and relatives, I started studying Spanish by myself. I used a combination of books, CD's and websites to study Spanish. Some ways to pick up Spanish words:
  • watch Spanish movies or series. To find some Spanish movie you like, you could check out the 'Spain section' of IMDB. Ofcourse you can also check out movies from Latin American and Central American countries, although they sometimes use different words for the same thing: this could cause confusion.
  • check out some Spanish music. From Spanish music you can also learn words and pronounciation. The only disadvantage is that many bands and groups in Spain like to use metaphors and things like that, this makes it harder to translate it to English(or any other language). If you are looking for the lyrics of some Spanish songs, check out: LetrasCanciones.org
  • go on holidays to Spain or any other Spanish speaking country.Preferably not a city/region that is flooded with tourists, otherwise you still won't learn anything.

Learn Spanish online

Here is a list of interesting websites to help you with your study of Spanish:
  • Wikibooks: Spanish course
  • BBC Online: Spanish steps Beginner's course Spanish.
  • A good dictionary is handy when learning a new language, but you can also try Google Translate. Be careful: It is nowhere close to a flawless automatic translator.Sometimes it even gets the wrong translation for words and sentences, but it is quick and handy.Just don't trust it for 100%.
